The heart is the strongest muscle in our body.
If you live to be 70 your heart will have beat two and a half billion times. Each heartbeat pumps blood around the body, pushing it from the left heart chambers, through arteries of ever-decreasing size, finally reaching the capillaries in all parts of the body.

Once your body has taken oxygen and nutrients from the blood, it is returned to the heart via the veins to the right chambers of the heart. On its way back, the blood passes through the liver and waste products are removed.
Heart is very vulnerable to damage from the things we do, like smoking, eating an unhealthy diet or putting it under stress. When your heart’s functions become compromised, this is known as cardiovascular disease, a broad term that covers any disorder to the system that has the heart at its centre.

  • Hypertensive heart disease -High blood pressure of unknown origin (primary hypertension) or caused by (secondary hypertension) certain specific diseases or infections, such as tumor in the adrenal glands, damage to or disease of the kidneys or their blood vessels. High blood pressure may overburden the heart and blood vessels and cause disease.

Hypertension
Hypertension is the leading risk factor for stroke. It also plays an important role in heart attack. Diet and nutrition play an important role in regulating blood pressure. Just imagine two simple factors creating directly hypertension and manage these through diet, such as salt and obesity.

Βlood lipid disorders eg. when we have high total blood cholesterol, or high triglyceride levels or high LDL cholesterol levels or low HDL cholesterol, are all factors that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Switch to a healthy diet, exercise and medication can alter the lipid profile in your blood.

Tobacco use whether smoking or chewing tobacco increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. The risk is particularly high in as many years smoke both for the man and for the woman. Passive smoking is also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Stopping tobacco use can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease significantly, no matter how long you have smoked.

Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. Obesity is a major risk for cardiovascular disease and you prone to diabetes. Diabetes is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Type 2 is an important risk factor for coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Having diabetes have twice as likely as someone who has to develop cardiovascular disease. If diabetes is not controlled, they are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease at an earlier age than other people and will be more catastrophic. For pre-menopausal women diabetes cancels the protective effect of estrogen and the risk of heart disease increases significantly.

Saturated Fat
A diet high in saturated fat increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. It is estimated that this causes approximately 31% of coronary heart disease and 11% of stroke worldwide.
